Special Tool 9645
 

engine: 996 3.4l 2001

In the removing and installing pistons section of the workshop manuals,

the documentation refers to a special tool 9645, a centring mandrel used for centring crankcase halves during crankcase sealing.

special tool 9645 is a centering mandrel put on the receiving bore of the oil pump and turned until the centering mandrel is braced in the crankcase half.

part number 000 721 964 50 is over 4k, so I have a 2 part question:

1. is that correct, is that a $4k tool?
2. if it is correct can I hear thoughts on a workaround without it?

Although I own a 996, I have not built / rebuilt a 996 engine. I can't imagine it absolutely requires this tool. Lots of rebuilt 996 engines floating around out there due to IMS as well.

Will you only be producing 3.6 cases or will you be making the 930 cases as well? Are the 3.6 cases shuffle pinned to not require the above mentioned tool? in a 930 case anything much over 500 hp needs to be shuffle pinned.

I'm only making 3.6 air cooled cases, but that isn't what the OP is asking about. They are not shuffle pinned, but that can be done to them just like any case.

All it is is a tool to hold the IMS shaft centered as you put the case halves together, it has nothing to do with case alignment.

I'd get something like a piece of hydraulic tube, machine it to the correct OD (hair under) and ID and bob's your uncle.
The handle turns the shaft so you can get the chain or gear to engage easy, you can just use a metric hex key.
