Pilot bearing help/ 1979 3.0 and 915
This is the first engine I've come across without the 3 bolt pilot bearing.
Can anyone shed some insight as to what I have or what I need to replace? |

It's a pressed in pilot.
Use a large socket to drive in to supporting the back of the flywheel Smaller socket to drive out. This pilot bearing was used from 1970 to 79 I don't remember the pilot for the 2.0 at this moment. Bruce |

You have an early 9 bolt flywheel which is around 1978-1979.
![]() It uses the same pilot bearing as the 6 bolt flywheels used from 1965 - 1977. ![]() The Part Number is 901.102.025.01 Last edited by chris_seven; 05-22-2017 at 11:51 PM.. |

Yes I call it the early or small hole flywheel, the pilot bearing fits into the flywheel hole.
You can use an early SC flywheel on a late SC, but not the other way around, as the early SC crank is not drilled for the larger bolt on holder. BTW if you have the holder (like the two in the above pic) you can press out the old pilot bearing and the felt washer and bearing is the same as the type 4 VW, 914/4 etc. Less than $10 from any VW shop. This works for all '65 to all SC, don't know about the later years but I believe to '87. I did it on my late SC holder.
