What is the best way to renew or restore the fan housing and impeller to original appearance?

Contact Mark Motshagen. He does great work.

There are some threads on this. Google is your friend.

Two problems with your request, best and original. You will have to decide. Agreed Mark's work is great.

Mark does exceptional work but (as far as I know) he does not offer returning a fan or housing to original appearances---he does coated finishes.

If we're referring back to the "original state" of a fan, Porsche applied a thin, non durable coating to them post production. Once installed and operated, that coating goes bye-bye... and the fan's metal surface oxidizes. To get to the raw surface of these parts... it's necessary to remove the fan and degrease it. Cover alternator and degrease the housing. The oxidized metal as it stands is then exposed. The patina... it's generally uneven.

It's possible for the genuinely insane to achieve a more refined patina on the fan by spending MANY hours polishing the casting to a mirror finish, then... letting the polished surface oxidize. Is it worth it? (Being insane, I speak from experience: It's not---at least in my humble opinion.) Driving in the rain or any water on this metal also messes with it.

If we're talking about how to maintain fan & house to a high quality appearance, Mark's approach = one avenue. I have no personal experience with how his or similar finishes hold up over time. Would be nice if someone commented on this. To maintain a "natural silver lustre" on fan & house... scotch padding every few months works nicely IMHO. (When doing this, I remove fan and mask center hub area to preserve the hub's anodizing. Housing straps are also anodized. Removing fan makes process much easier and allows a more thorough job to be done to boot.)
