991 Turbo Killer Help Please
So I am sure everyone has heard of bench racing... let's make it real.
I am currently in a friendly dispute over the ability of an air-cooled 911 having the ability to win a 0-60 and 0-100 race with a 991 Turbo S. What I want to do is build a motor, mated to a stock 930, 4 speed gearbox, that can win this race. What I have so far is: 930 based engine (not convinced yet that this is the way to go). So, 3.3 crank, and stock rods (ARP hardware). Thinking 9.0:1 JE or something similar for turbo application. I have a set of 3.2L big port heads twin plugged and chamfered for a 3.4/3.5L application ready to go. But... if I don't want to shift, I might change the retainers and springs so I can get the RPM to do 60mph in 1st gear. Other than this, I am wide open. Thinking EFI with a Carrera manifold to match the heads. Major questions... cam grind? single or dual turbo, super charger, or just build a wicked NA motor. The gearbox is a major limiting factor but I want to work around that. This is a guts and glory deal but if I win, it's a HUGE deal. 2.65 seconds seems to be the 991 TS 0-60. So that means, based strictly on weight calculations, 700+hp. Base chassis is a 1986 narrow body 911 with enough torsion bar to choke a horse. What say ye, Pelican brain trust? |
sounds fun.. traction will be your main issue. a 991 turbo S with PDK is just stupid fast... good luck!

Eddie Bello is your guy. He used to drag race a air cooled 964 turbo that was in the 1100HP range, and was pulling the front tires off the ground.
The problem is, what you are wanting to do, you have everything against you, and only one thing going for you. Pros on your side- less weight cons on your side- traction control liquid cooling better flowing heads awd advanced engine management tire size Dont get me wrong, I would choose an older 911 or 930 ANYDAY over a newer P-car, but the new ones get the job done, and they do it very well. I don't care what your trans or differential gears are, you'll win with anti-lag and drag racing slicks alone.
You need to leave the launch with at least 400ft/lbs of torque and have that torque coupled yo the ground with drag racing slicks and you'll be ok. This will require a massive burnout that covers a long distance to lay a layer of rubber down followed by actually keeping the tires in that path. Hit bare concrete or asphalt, and the slicks will not hook. |
This will most likely be done on a non-prepped surface. An impromptu environment if you know what I mean. 400ft/lbs of torque doesn't seem like it will get the job done.
I'm thinking shuffle pinned case is a must... and a modern turbo with twin scroll. Or should I go with two hairdryers? Cam and comp ratio are the biggest questions right now. |
I think your biggest obstacle is 4-wheel drive verses 2-wheel. You can make a motor with plenty of power to compete but you won't be able to put it to the road without 4 wheel drive.
You need a Carrera 4 for your basis. |
I'm a newb with turbos, but I'd say if it's worth shuffle pinning the case, it's probably worth using non-stock rods. I understand that head gasket sealing can be an issue at the power levels you're talking about. There are some options out there if you read around on the forum. And you'll probably want the biggest intercooler you can fit.

991 TTS does 0-60 in mid 2 seconds or rather capable of specially if on sticky tire, 0-100 comes very quick so unless you have a helluva of build and super driver you will get hosed. Also is this a stock 991 TTS?

Funny I have played with a few 991s yet have not done a "dig" from 0 as that's where the awd will get you but have done a 30 mph pull to WELL over a hundred and he was many car lengths behind. We are working on traction control via ms3 and a front wheel sensor to all but eliminate tire spin. Almost have it , then maybe that "dig" will be more than tire spin thru third

706 RWHP will do that to a car with 200 less whp ;)
Try that race with a 996/997/991TT that have same HP as you see how that goes |
