I know it's a little off topic, but figured nobody would mind if I posted progress on the 3D model version as well.

Little progress today, continuing with the easier stuff. I also started the cam carrier for cylinders 1/2/3 but that's in it's infancy so no pics.

edit: see my dedicated 3D model thread here:

a little more progress, got a lot more done on the cam housings, lots of features... These aren't 100%, nearly impossible to get that with all of the internal stuff, but it's a representation anyway.

I rebuilt the exact same motor in my '70 911T. In my case the engine needed new p/c's and cams due to wear. I went with a Solex-style cam and S p/c's (9.8:1 compression). Also did all the reliability upgrades: case timecerted, piston squirters (you have to with the all-aluminum S p/c's, optional with a stock T), 911SC oil pump, wider idler arms, and 930 chain tensioners (you don't need hydraulic if you update the idler arms).

2.2's are really expensive to rebuild because they basically need everything. But it's a fun motor.

I've been following your artwork on instagram and your motor build on Pelican but didn't put two and two together until you cross posted your CAD models. I'm in a similar situation; I bought Wayne's book and am going to tackle a 3.0sc rebuild with the idea that it's better to do it yourself and learn a little on the way, even if it's not the safest path. Anyway, all the best on your projects!

Good luck with your build - love the CAD renderings! I hope to get my 3L rebuild running in the next few weeks.

Update time, been holding off on moving too far forward until I get a chance to 3D model the case, but I did get something done.

Swung down to a friends shop and stuck it in a big parts washer he has.

The inside is pretty clean so I stuck the two case halves in lightly bolted together.

Pic is a bit blurry, thanks potato phone, but it's mostly cleaned up now.

I'm going to go over in by hand and clean a bit more, but now it's ready for more inspection and for me to model it.

Excellent work on the CAD model. Following you on IG. I rebuilt my 3.0 last winter. One of the most stressful and enjoyable projects I've ever done. 2nd engine I've rebuilt and it's now got 7000 miles on it and runs great. I've been thinking of putting a 6 in my '71 914, so I'll been keen to follow along here. I even picked up a Vellios oil tank for an eventual build. Cheers!

Sub'd. Cool thread
Cheers

Glen, just read your thread and wanted to say, I think you'll end-up with a really nice engine with your plan. You're clearly a careful, meticulous guy and that motor looks to this (amateur) fellow traveler like it's in good shape and should respond well to cleaning and careful reassembly. All the great hints you'll get from Aaron, as well as reading stuff here by the assembled gurus will get you where you want to go. 914's are awesome cars, all the better with a proper 6 cylinder engine installed. Best of luck to you, John in CT.

Been awhile since I've posted any project news for this, it's been cold here in MN and my garage heater isn't set up. On top of that I've had the 3D model project and the baby keeping me busy.

I've been collecting parts and planning though. New valves and springs, heads are ready to go to the machine shop to get rebuilt which will probably be next month at some point.

Also scored a set of MSDS headers. Went with the 1.625" O.D. headers. Wanted to be able to increase the displacement in the future if I want to, and these shouldn't be too big for the 2.2.

I've got the engine case half 3D models and the carb 3D models pretty much done, so that means it's getting to the point of assembly. Or at lest further checking... my next step is to assemble the crank in the case, torque, and check for binding.

Edit: I read that I may have issues with the 1.625 headers using the Zenith carbs, as in may be nearly impossible to get the idle right. I have a few messages out for clarification but I may end up swapping these for 1.5"

Optimusglen 04-05-2018 09:58 AM

Today I went out and did a test assembly of the case, bearings, and crank. The goal was to see if the crank would turn freely while the case was bolted together and torqued. Unfortunately it looks as if my case falls into the same category of so many other mag cases. The crank turned smoothly at initial torque of 15lbft. But when brought up to 25lbft it would not.

So it looks like I'll be saving more and then sending it out to Ollies.

Can you supply more detail on the parts cleaning process used on your case? I've seen numerous warnings about hot tanking magnesium. Was this a heated process? What was the solvent?

(I'm starting a similar process on a '72 2.4 for my 914.)

thanks

Hey there, unfortunately I don't know the solvent used. I did it at a friends shop.

Worth noting is that another friend was there who has built numerous classic Porsche aircooled engines professionally and he had no qualms with using the parts washer.

I hadn't seen the warnings about hot tanking mag cases, what is the issue? That the heat would warp the case?

Trackrash 04-16-2018 07:11 AM

Some of the caustic chemicals used back in the day, would eat aluminum and dissolve magnesium. Most modern chemicals are aluminum "safe".

roblav 04-16-2018 07:21 AM

1.625 headers are probably too big.

porschetub 04-16-2018 09:36 PM

Currently running headers from a larger displacement motor,no issues I have noticed, tunes easily power comes on when it should, pretty much stock 2.2t with larger venturies and jets relative to that, don't see an issue except less your end power will be down a touch,it not like these motors don't like reving lol.

Optimusglen 02-19-2020 12:04 PM

Long time without an update. The project stalled for a bit while I diverted my fun budget to other things. Now getting back on it and my case just arrived at Ollie's yesterday. Going in there queue for inspection and eventually will have the work done. Planning on the bore to standard, oil bypass mod, and cyl height deck. Not sure what else they will recommend after inspection.

I pulled the studs out myself before shipping, pretty uneventful.

Elsewhere in the project, I ended up selling the headers due to some of the budgetary changes I eluded to. When it comes time to replace them I'll be getting a set that are more aligned to the engine size.

Cairo94507 02-19-2020 01:41 PM

Thanks for the update. I am a huge fan of your work. I look forward to seeing this engine come together and go into your car. Nothing like the sound of a Six behind your head on a nice canyon road.

daniworks92 02-19-2020 04:00 PM

I'm really impressed with your illustrations. Hoping to see more updates of your work.

Optimusglen 06-16-2021 09:12 PM

Well jeeze, it's been a long time with no update.

The engine build picked up once I got my case back from Ollies, Pretty standard affair without too much taken off. My 4 cyl 1.9 died and I wasn't about to put any money into it when I already had my 6 case at Ollies.

So, I started collecting the rest of the parts I would need, and cleaning the stuff I had.

Current build is a pretty stock 2.2T running Zeniths and 1.5" MSDS headers with ceramic coating. Upgraded to a 4-rib oil pump and had that rebuilt by Henry at Supertech, to work with the oil bypass mod on the case. I'll be running a 123 distributor and MSD Streetfire CDI. Muffler is one built by Ben from 914-6Werkshop. I'm also using Bens engine tins and oil tank with filler. On the Zeniths, 30mm venturis, 55 idle jets, and 130mm main jets as a starting point, with K&N filters. Otherwise everything is stock, I like to refer to the build as planting my feet firmly at the top of the slippery slope.

In the suspension/brakes department I wanted to build it up a bit from the stock 914-4 1.7 goods. Opted to use the 3" 911T front struts paired with Brembo AM calipers and a new larger master cylinder. New bushings and general clean-up. In the rear I purchased ground control springs (140lb) and adjustable sleeves.

I sent my hardware (well, most of it anyway) out to my bud Eric at PMBPerformance, they do in-hopuse plating now and it worked out great.

Some parts pics since I posted last.

I don't have a pic of the current status. I have the chain boxes on and the cam gear alignment nailed down for both sides. Next step is cam timing!!
