How did I break my Cam Shafts

-disassembled 2.7 yesterday

-broke the end of the cam shaft off

-yes used the crow foot and socket from Pelican

-done 3-4 engines before with same tools, never had issues

-used (2) 2 foot long 1/2" drive ratchets

I doubt you damaged them.

Its more likely that they were stressed upon installation during the tightening process or perhaps they were dropped.

They are more fragile than people think.

Better now than on the track.

Show us a picture.

-will get a picture tomorrow

-I'm glad it happened also now, better than in my running rebuilt engine

- no idea, I bought it from a guy who bought it from a guy deal

- I will measure some of the lobes when I pull the cams from the cam housings

Totally agree,...someone overtorqued them.

Trackrash 08-29-2017 08:43 AM

Is that why Porsche changed to the newer style bolt in the '80s?

Edoyle 08-29-2017 06:45 PM

If anything, this is a good reminder to torque the cam sprocket correctly instead of zapping it with an airgun as I have heard some people do (to remove and install).

thanks to everyone for response, figured it was not something I did but something the PO did

really didn't crank that hard on them, put a lot more torque on other ones that didn't bust but came loose just fine
