What can i do with a 2.2?

Hey guys, I am a novice porsche dude.
I come from a V-8 world, so i need some help in what i can do to increase performance out of a 2.2 liter, carbed engine

What i really dont want to hear is buy a bigger porsche engine and stick it in there, The engine matches the car and i would like to keep it that way is there anything you can do to

Bump compression up
Bigger jugs and pistons without serious machine work
different cams
head work
fuel injection (electronic)

I know exactly how to do all these things on a V-8, but have no idea on one of these porsches engines.

If you search 2.2 engines and posts especially from Henry at Supertech ( or just search his posts) you will find a wealth of info.
Yes keep the original engine and do the upgrades that can get you up to S type performance.

Deja vu. Lots of discussion, as mentioned, on this subject recently.

With these motors the possibilities are great, but how big is your budget?

1. Buy Wayne's "How to rebuild 911 motors" book available here. Bruce Anderson's "Porsche 911 Performance Handbook" is also a valuable reference. Spend some time learning about these motors and all their variations and possible modifications.

2. Start a spread sheet listing all the possible mods, like you listed, with their costs. Cams, compression, larger bore, stroke and port size are all possibilities.

3. You may want to consider a newer larger motor, like a 3,0 or 3,2 to swap out. Save the unmolested 2,2.

Thanks track rash, the Bruce Anderson's "Porsche 911 Performance Handbook" is one I have not seen. I do have all of Waynes books and have read them from cover to cover. I'll have to pick that one up. Love your name by the way

Bruce's book is excellent.

What it will tell you is you can use a 2.4 crank and overbore your jugs to 86mm to make your engine a 2.5l. Pistons, cams, compression, fuel delivery can be whatever you want. I assume you are starting from a T?

Yes, it's a T. It has sole carbs, 2.2
Interesting about the 2.5l, I'll have to read up on it

EBS also has Mahle Motorsport new 10.3:1 86mm in stock. I'm considering the same build...

I'd check with Henry to give you realistic budget and performance numbers. I assume you still want to keep it streetable, so don't go too crazy on cams, etc.

U can build a 2.2s. Pretty cool and fast

Are you thinking single plug or twin plug? Would be curious to learn more about your build.

I go back and forth. I'm having Steve Weiner do the heads for me and he has convinced me to at least equip the heads for it.

I still haven't 100% decided on engine specs. Either 66x90 or 70.4x86. I've got a couple cores and may eventually build one of each.

Solex? Those would give you some extra cash to work with if you sold them. Zenith, not so much.

Yeah I've got 2 66 mm cranks, and am thinking of a 66x90 single plug recipe. Only problem seems to be a piston spec that nets an appropriate compression ratio.

Je makes something in the low 9S or 8.5 RS sets are still around, New and used.

turbobrat930 10-04-2017 06:02 AM

You can do the same mods that you can do to any 911 engine. Keeping the original crankcase, you can:

- Stroke the crankshaft and use custom length rods
- custom C/R pistons
- cams
- extensive head work
- Twin plug
- headers
- EFI or bigger carbs
- lower C/R pistons, and add a turbo

It is just how much money you are willing to spend. Of course if you are not only looking to keep the original engine, but keep the appearance original as well, then you are limited by internal engine work and parts only.

True with Mahles. Not sure what JE or CP offer. Custom pistons may be the answer. My SS2,5 has the 2,7 Carrera p&cs. Only 8.5 to 1 CR. You want around 9.5 or so.

Je offers them in the mid 9s.

Would that be the 90 mm JE's with the big dome volume listed here:
PORSCHE - PORSCHE 911 (Automotive Section) - JE Pistons
261664 Product Detail Information - JE Pistons

Running on a 66 mm crank would bring down the CR by (I can't remember the number, but around 0.5 pts) - so the low dome volume ones on a 66 mm crank would be lower comp, but the large dome pistons on a 66 mm crank would still be running close to 10:1 (which is pushing single plug??)

Matt Monson 10-05-2017 08:32 PM

261663. I'm not really interested in being up at 10 unless I commit to twin plug.

But I thought the +/-.5 delta was based on the change in rod, not the crank. I believe 2.4 rods would stay around the published compression but 2.2 rods would drop it a bit. Is my understanding wrong?
