964 Cylinder Head Removal
Hoping for some guidance...
I am removing one cylinder head - which I believe will require the entire bank of cylinders to be removed. I assume the sprockets will have to come off, the cams and the rockers have to be removed as well. Can I keep the heads attached to the cam housings? Also, can I leave the chain boxes on. Do I need the 9191 tool to do this safely? Thanks for any help. |

Strictly speaking the rockers and cams do not need to come out in order to remove the three heads at once, but if you want to take one of the heads off the cam towers, they will need to come off.
Cam sprockets and cam thrust plates will need to come off, then chain boxes loosened. Undo head bolts and wiggle it out around the chain and the end of the cam. |

Thanks again for your help.
How important is the flywheel lock during this process? I have been sent a 996 flywheel lock. |

You will need the flywheel lock to loosen cam chain sprockets.

Thanks for getting back to me. I have the special tool for the cam nut removal. I do not have the flywheel lock.

I didn’t need to lock the flywheel to undo the cam chain sprockets. The tool holds the sprocket while you undo the nut. The crankshaft is not moving.
