Engine ID 2.7 - 2.4S ?? Maybe Something Else
Hi - I am new to Porsche ownership I recently bought a 1969 911E Targa which needs to be completely restored back to original - someone turned it into a 1985 wide body car back in the 80's I was told had been fitted with a 2.7 engine back then but I have taken the engine out and I have my doubts that it is a 2.7 the engine number is 6349125 can anyone help me figure out if this is a 2.7 I think it could be a 72-73 2.4 S engine but I am not sure Thanks for all your help

74 S or Us Carrera. Should be a 911/93 type. 2.7.

You could post some pictures in the 911 Tech forum. Some pictures of the motor would be helpful.
Bruce Anderson's 911 Porsche Performance Handbook has lots of good info, worth buying. Porsche 911 Performance Handbook BK145389 - BK-145389 | Pelican Parts

I'm looking at page 44 of the Red Book and it seems that the number falls within the range for a 1974-77 Targa which would indicate a 2.7.
The range for that engine is 6349001 to 6349236 and your engine number seems to be in the middle. Do you have a 911/98 sporto case (magnesium)? |

The 3 in the second position in the engine number indicates that it is the 175 PS engine available in the 911S and in the US Carrera. The 9 in the fourth position in the engine number indicates that it is the engine of a car equipped with Sportomatic transmission. All this leads to the conclusion that it's a 911.98 engine. |

Thanks
Wow this is really helpful Thanks to all who replied - I need to check the engine ID the car is across town right now - given it appears to be a 2.7 S engine - and I need a 2.2 MFI engine I guess it needs to be sold was this version of the 2.7 a good engine in terms of how the Porsche community view it. We stripped it and had all the parts checked etc and it is all in great condition don't know whether I should rebuild it stock or not - any thoughts on this ? Thanks for all your help

Opps
Just realized my message is a bit garbled - What I was trying to say was how is this engine viewed by the Porsche community is it worth rebuilding / putting back together or just sell as it is ?

Yes, magnesium, but the 7r case that you have is the strongest of those magnesium cases. And is the same type of case as the MFI carreras including 1973rs. A machine shop can make them stronger by shuffle-pinning if you're planning to rebuild in the near future.

Thank you - Hmmm that"s interesting so it could be used to build a 2.7 clone engine then is it worth anything or are there lots of these ?

There are a number of subtle differences through the years on these motors. Tell us what your plans are and there will be no shortage of opinions.
Read Bruce Anderson's 911 Porsche Performance Handbook, and report back. http://www.pelicanparts.com/More_Info/BK145389.htm?pn=BK-145389&SVSVSI=911E

To answer your question, it really comes down to what you are trying to acheive. You could rebuild the 2,7 and run that motor in your car. With the correct mods it would be a nice runnig motor. That would be my choice.
Do you have an MFI set up now? Most guys will run carbs as the MFI is $$$$, unless you have a good running setup already. I guess if you are going for total originality sell the 2,7 and buy a 2,2. Keep in mind that a good 2,2 E motor may be hard to find.

I think it should go back to original - they way they made it and that as you say is going to be difficult and expensive so I think selling the 2.7 is the way to go I just don't know what it is worth and whether because it is mag like the 2.7 RS that makes any difference to the value.

All the motors from late '68 to '77 are magnesium.
The values of any of these mag motors depends on condition, how complete it is and to a certain extent the model. Good running or boat anchor, there is a big difference. A fresh complete with MFI 2,7 RS motor will be big bucks. A 2,7 CIS that has been out in the rain, probably good for scrap.

engine number
Peter Morgan's Original Porsche 911 page 65 says that your engine is a 1974 911S sportomatic, the type will be 911/98. The numbers ranged from 9001 to 9236. It is a 2.7 litter and should have the more efficient heat exchangers. It should have a CIS system for induction.
if the updates were done it is a good motor i have a 75 with one that runs great.
