Euro/ROW 3.2 ID Help Advice

Hi Gentleman-

Purchased a project 76 slantnose for the the 3.2 motor and then I believe received a bonus.

Wanted to double check with you guys, I looked up engine type and # in Wayne's Book and it stated ROW. 230 HP. Still in shock.

I know the retired mechanic that did the conversion, in 1995, according to the history it was a low mile strong runner until the motor had multiple low head stud failures. It was torn down and left for 10 years+.

Currently, I have all the parts and a non split case, all studs have been removed.
What do need to inspect in regard to the health of the pistons and cylinders? There is still a pronounced crosshatch pattern in the cylinders. They are Mahle .

Excited about having a chance for no pressure re-build. Debating if I should spilt the case and inspect the bottom end before installing new head studs. It was on a stand and covered, spins freely. Is it possible to rinse/clean the bottom end with out splitting? My beta say the motor has less than 50 K. Any advice on the best route to take from here would be great.

Thank you for your time and knowledge.

Split the case, why assume everything is good? No reason to take chanses on a $15K motor.

As far as the cylinders go you will need to accurately measure the bores according to the manual and compare with the specs.

The pistons likewise should be measured, with the upper ring clearance being key.

Congrats and good luck.

Smart advise.
Hoping everything checks out.
Is a ROW 3.2 that much more valuable than a 930/21?

Open the case. That way you get to replace the intermediate shaft bearings and change the chain rails and install all new gaskets.
The gasket set fifty to sixty dollars with all new seals use 574on the center line
You get to hold the crank and check the mains for scratches which will be indicative of the rod bearings. If the mains are defective, you ll have to do the whole bottom end
You know why it came apart, replace the bottom row with steel studs
Gets the heads checked with valve job, put it all back together
The main flaw would be in oil consumption, a valve job usually controls that.
You’re up and running, if there is a flaw from wear you’ll never have to question what you already did.

Appreciate the advice Flat 6.

I will post some images on the cylinders, can I DIY measuring the Piston and Cylinders with a basic caliper?

The exhaust and heat boxes are 77 thermal reactor replacement not what you want to use
You ll need more accurate measuring equipment than calipers.

Yes, They are toast too.
Have a line on a set of SSI, no smog here in Hawaii.
Are the tolerances the same for Euro Pistons and US spec lower compression models. Wayne's book does not deliniiate between the two?

They will be marked for size on the face of the piston and on the outer base of the cylinder top as it sits on the case, next to the triangle.
Sizes are zero, one, and two

Assessment

The pistons are 1's

Off from the firehouse today, had a chance to see what the 76 slant nose conversion looked like in the light. Got the parts organized/inventory, dam near all here I believe.
The tub is clean no obvious rust in the pan. I am surprised. Was it 76 or 77 that the bodies were galvanized?
Cleaned out the interior and found a really clean black leather interior.
Centerline wide body wheels. Look like 9 or 10'" out back
May just have to find some fiberglass Turbo front fender fix this one.
Excited about putting this Euro 3.2 back together.

The trans should have notches for sensors cut into bell housing.
The mag case is going to be just fine.

Good idea pulling the case apart while you're there. Sounds like a great deal!

The wear limit on the cylinders is around 0.003" taper and 0.0015" out of round. No caliper I know of is capable of this accuracy.

That is my goal, I will need to source some fiberglass front turbo fenders first. The more I look at this car the harder it would be to part her. Interiors tight, not the greatest paint job but no visible rust, pans solid ect.

I could defiantly be agreeable to that trade at some point.
