cam timing question
hey wayne
Well I timed my cam per your book, BA, Bentley, Factory etc... You mention to vice grip the tensioner arm to make sure the chain is taunt and you get an accurate reading... On the 4-5-6 bank I found I could really tighten the chain quite a bit, actually enough so the sprocket was touching the "shelf" in the chain housing. I was wondering how tight is tight. The tightening can really vary the chain timing...how tight is it in real time (when the chain is tightened by the oil tesioners) I don't know if my chains are stretched...the carrera tensioners were installed 1.5 years ago but callas. You need to get a feel for the tools, and what you are expecting the tools to do.
The clamp , or vise-grip is to just take all the slack out of the valve train. You dont need to crush the vise grips to get an accurate valve timing reading. |
I used this little tool (available from PP) for the job of tensioning the chains during timing. Much kinder to your engine than vise-grips etc......
