2.2T head rebuild - new springs?
Question for the knowledgeable. I'll be getting the heads rebuilt on my 2.2T soon. I will be doing new valves, guides, and of course seals. What's the consensus of springs? Is it needed? Do these fail often?
For reference, it's a stock rebuild of a 125hp 2.2T from 1971. |
How many miles? Personally I would change them. Relatively cheap insurance. Catastrophic if they fail.

Unknown miles on the engine, if bearing surfaces are any indication it's led a pretty leisurely life.
I'll look into getting the springs tested against the spec. Looking at our forum sponsors catalog, it's about $171 for the cheapies (O.E.M. brand, which I've never been fond of) and $500-$600 for Porsche or "high performance" aasco springs. I'm just a 914 guy, so those numbers don't fall into the relatively cheap category. |

Check out Eibach. They have quality 911 sets for around $75.

Thanks Gordon, any idea where I can purchase them online? I see them in their catalog but can't find anywhere to buy them.
Edit: found them a couple places and they're up around the $300 mark. |
I'm building a 7500rpm twin plus short stroke 2.5l engine on 73.5 CIS heads. Steve Weiner is prepping them. He's going to test the springs and only replace as needed.

2.2T head rebuild - new springs?
Porsche stock springs are very good if in spec and most are out of the thousands I have serviced. But spec is not everything, look for pitting on the spring, that will cause a failure in the future.

The only time I use aftermarket springs are in race (or track) engines that will see continuous use in excess of 7K RPM.
Its very important to choose such springs wisely since many of them are far too stiff and this puts heavy wear (not to mention drag) on cams, rocker arms, rocker shafts, chain sprockets, idlers, and IS sprockets. In short, you pay a penalty for short component life if you make a mistake. Cheaper isn't always better. |
