911E Engine rebuild
I have a 911E that I'm going to have the engine rebuilt on. I'd be pleased if I can get any advice.
What is the way to go? It is stock original at present. Are there any improvements I should make? 911S pistons? etc. I want a touring car with a bit of zip, not a racing engine. Reliability is the main aim. Thanks in advance of any replies. |

There are any number of improvements that can be made, depending on your preferences and budget.
You should buy Wayne's How to Rebuild and Modify 911 motors and Bruce Anderson's Porsche 911 Performance Handbook. Available in the parts catalog here. Required reading for anyone considering a rebuild or upgrade. ![]() A owner's manual or workshop manual are also recommended

I am at the end of a 13 month rebuild on my 77 2.7s which I have done at home in my garage. (With the help of the books mentioned above) I kept it quite moderate by adding some SC spec cams and J&E pistons which should bring up the compression slightly. Anything that was recommended in Bruce and Wayne's books about upgrades for better reliability I tried to implement and stay within budget.
Be prepared for the costs to soar, the time schedule to be extended and for the 'may as well whilst we're in there' comments to be a regular occurance. Other than that do as much research as possible and search for the best engine builder that you can afford. Good luck, Jason.

Thanks for your comments.
I'll try and explain a little more. I'm using a guy who is a race and track engine builder. He is not a Porsche specialist, but has built Porsche Engines in the past. I'd like my engine to be reliable, fast, but not race fast, and smooth. The car has a 2.2 engine and 901 gearbox. we're rebuilding both. So I was just trying to ascertain if there are any "Must have" upgrades or things I should put on the tick list before I take the engine across to him. As I said he's a very good engine builder but not a specialist on that engine. I thought that there may be a bit of advice to be had. I own most of those books and can buy the one I don't. Then do lots of bits that may be listed, but theres always that... I wouldn't do that, or you should have done this after the event. Theres also the fact that sometimes thoughts have moved on and technology used today can be different. So I thought I'd ask before setting things in motion. :-) |

70 or 71? The 2.2E is one of my favorite engines. 66mm short crank revs really quickly and the torque curve is perfect for mixed street, backroad and occasional track driving.
Here is my short list for your engine. 1. There are the usual magnesium case upgrades. Lots on this topic. 2. There are some of the usual oil mods (oil bypass) 3. If a 70, have piston squirters added (included in 71) 4. Consider a more modern cam profile. The E is great but you can fill in low or high end with little sacrificing with a different cam profile. This will depend on your driving style and road selection. 5. Make sure MFI system is cleaned and calibrated for the new engine build. 6. Enjoy the new engine.

+1 on jp's info.
2,2 Es are a sweet running motor as is. The easiest bang for the buck would be bumping the compression with S pistons. E cams are a good cam, but depending on what sort of character of motor you want, you could go with a more modern grind or possibly a "solex" grind. An S cam would be very peaky with little bottom end power, so probably not your best choice. If your cylinders are not to spec you could have them bored out. A slight increase in displacement would be nice. After that a 70mm crank and rod set....

Thanks guys.
It's a 71 car. Where will I find the Magnesium case upgrade threads? And which ones should I focus on? I'm hoping that it'll be exactly as you describe.. Sweet! But I'd like to get it right first time. Appreciate your help. Nick |

They are threaded inserts called "case savers" on this side of the pond. Anyone experienced with rebuilding the mag case motors will (should) be knowledgeable of this upgrade.

Thanks Gordon,
He's done the engines before as he worked for a Porsche specialist many years ago. I want to make sure though that he's using the latest ideas on rebuild not the 1980's ideas. He current builds engines for a well known make of track/racing cars and so I suspect he knows whats what. I'll make sure that they're done. If anyone else has any thoughts let me know. I'd like it to be a great engine and not just a good one. Nick |

2.2Es are great engines.
But adding 2.4 crank and rods are more greater. ![]() If your pistons and cylinders are within spec, keep em.

We started it today.
The report so far is that it looks to be in good shape, but we haven't got fully disassembled as yet. I'll post when I've more to tell or advice to ask. :-) |
