Different Engine Case Numbers

Question for anyone - I bought a '72 2.4L MFI used engine to rebuild. After tearing down the engine I noticed that one engine case is a 3R and the other is a 4R. Is this normal? Or is it more likely someone replaced one of the cases?

Thanks

Odd and even, right and left.
There is a set of numbers on the top centerline that are on each side to show a matched case.

You will need case line honed if it’s not a match.
Pedro.

The case halves should be machined flat and line honed, no matter what. :) :)

The 3R / 4R combo is normal, so no worries there. Just be sure the mating numbers on top match. Here is my thread on case revisions:

Please PM me with all of the numbers on the case to add to my database.
Steve's comment is very important.
