Why don't you start with a couple of basics..

Look under the front fenders as run your hands around underneath to see if you find a seam where the fenders were welded. On a car that late the front fenders would have been stamped and then hand finished. These are/would be the same fenders used by the dealer (AJR) if they did a conversion.. they are factory. You will need to do some diligence in either jacking the car up or getting it on a lift and removing a wheel.

Check the left rear vent for the factory oil cooler.. also look at the lines to/on the cooler. The factory lines/set-up was very specific for this car.

Where on the fenders is this vin tag that you speak of? You stated that it has had a re-paint.. is there evidence of where the vin tag was taped over for the respray.. this should give you some indication about how thorough the respray was as well.

Also, you state that the option tag was missing due to the repaint.. to remove the option tag inside the trunk indicates a pretty thorough repaint.. my question would be why.. as there is usually no need to paint the inside of the tub or underside of hood.. just to refresh a paint job.
