Given the choice, I'd stick with the Carrera G50. I'm not a big fan of the G50/50 for a street car because stock gearing is typical late-'80s king-of-the-Autobahn top speed ratios, pretty dull on the street unless you've got a ton of torque. You have to go through and change out 2-3-4 for it to be fun again.
Starting with a Carrera box, you only have to add a Turbo 5th for a low rpm freeway cruising gear.

Sure, the G50/50 is sturder with a larger ring gear, but we've never broken the Carrera G50, even with torque and really wide tires.

And the G50/50 is nearly a full 25mm longer, so a bigger PITA to fit into the pre-89 chassis. That pretty much commits you to either cutting out the center of the torsion bar housing (lots of fab + coil-overs), or converting to a G50/50 t-bar housing. No fun.
