I remember wondering about that open pipe thing when I saw it for the first time, too.
Hey, any chance your screen name, the SBK part, is a reference to World Superbike? I ask, because I love that series and don't think I've missed a race on TV since about 1997 or so (started watching when I was amateur roadracing motorcycles and have followed it, along with MotoGP, ever since).
