Dirty filthy engine

It looks like the motor has not had a rag on it for a decade or so, probably never underneath. That's about to change. I accidentally found it's a lot easier to work in the engine bay when it's 4 ft in the air, just put the air cleaner at eye level.

Am I wrong to think that if I clean everything, I'll be able to determine where all this oil is coming from, or if it's old leaking. The cross-member is caked with old oil residue.

...and after about an hour with engine degreaser and rags. Too close quarters for wire brushing. Is it supposed to be bare metal or under-coated?

What about those rusted pipes? Should they be replaced sooner or later?
