If the waste gate boost signal is taken from the intercooler (like OEM) then the waste gate will see boost spikes during snap shut throttle events. Those boost spikes will allow the waste gate to remain open for a microsecond until the recirculation valve opens and relieves the pressure above the throttle plate. This could allow a quick fireball out the waste gate pipe.
Yes, quick fireball. What you describe sounds like what it's doing. This was at the track going from high RPM to hard braking.
