While your first statement, that it is synchronized, is correct, your follow up is false. Go take a look at the pictures mentioned. Reverse is NOT synchronized. If I can engage reverse from a stop without a synchro why must 1st have one?

There is no technical reason why 1st must be synchronized. Ever hear of "crash boxes"? The whole gearbox is non-synchro. It wasn't until the G50 family that 911s had a synchronized reverse gear.
