I am looking at this car tomorrow. First time buyer. What should I look for in particular? Car has 100k miles, automatic. Besides normal things to look at (tires, body, interior) is there anything special I should look at? Also, does anybody have any suggestions for a mechanic in Seattle to perform a PPI. Thanks in advance.

Scanny, most of the important things to check really require a lift for a complete inspection. You need to check suspension bushings, shocks, brakes, fluid leaks, oil leaks from engine...
If possible, a compression or leak down test would provide good info. Service recrords are always a plus, ask about previous maintenance intervals.
A good place to start would be the following:
john walker's workshop
7613 greenwood ave. n.
seattle, wa, 98103
206.789.6800
jwworkshop@aol.com

He does Porsche work but may be able to point you to a good
BMW shop. I'd start with him. He's a long time supporter of Pelican and a very good guy.

Good luck. Hope it turns out to be a good car.

Thanks for the help. John works on my porsche. I'm looking for the John Walker of BMW's but I don't think that person exists. He referred me to another Porsche mechanic that works on other european cars.

I think you're right, there are not many John Walker's out there, you'd be very fortunate to find his BMW counterpart but it might happen. Keep us posted on what happens next. I've always liked the 6 series cars.

What about a price check on this car. It has blue exterior with blue leather intrerior, 103,000 miles, 3rd owner, body and interior is nice, seems to have some maintenance records, recent upgrades to cooling system, automatic. Asking $4,200.

I see those cars going for 3500-4500 depending on condition and that one sounds like a good car if it all checks out. If you could get if for 3900.00 or so I think you'd be ok, slightly more if it's really sound mechanically. Some knock off a bit on the price for automatics but you might find you like the automatic better depending on your driving needs.
Those cars did have cooling issues and had to be watched carefully for radiator and water pump problems. Head gaskets
were a common problem. I think one thing I'd do for sure is check carefully for oil in the coolant....
