Intermittent Stumble while driving

Got a 89 525i BMW that has a intermittent stumble while driving. Somtimes it will shut off when first started a couple of times then it will start idling fine. Now when you run about 55 itwill give you a quick stumble, check engine light flashes on then goes out, and car runs good again, till the next stumble. Was able to get a DTC1261 (fuel pump relay). Replaced it but no change . At times I could not get a flash code to work. Removed throttle switch (full of oil) cleaned and replaced o-ring seal. Since then it has done alot better, but still stumbles at times. Any help with this would be wonderful because it is driving me nuts trying to find it. Thanks in advance J.C.

i subscribe to CAR MD--the code detector tool has saved me a lot of time and money--my 323 was doing what you describe and it turned out to be the spark coils that fit over the sparkplugs--a cheap and easy DIY fix--(cheap compared to the dealer and even my local independent garage guy--who i trust and respect)
