An attempt to explain exactly what it is I'm doing in the garage all day . . .

Jig Is Coming Together

Posted 10-10-2010 at 07:49 PM by 1968Cayman (The 1968 Cayman Project)

I posted a picture of the pieces in the project thread and will likely post more before the end of the week; the legs are all on and solidly welded. I'm just waiting for my .25" plates to be finished so that I can weld the nuts onto the inside and weld the plates to the legs.

Didn't realize that it had been nearly a year to the day between posts here. Oh well. Some projects move faster than others. Where others have money that allows them to complete their endeavors (which would...

Wow. Something New.

Due to the kindness and generosity of a fellow Pelican, I have finally come upon some steel for the jig and should be picking it up in the next week or two; have already blocked out time at the fabrication shop for cutting precise lengths (and squaring/leveling the outside box portion). Looks like the project will be moving along again soon. I'm trying to spot trouble ahead of the build as this piece of equipment will likely become a permanent addition to the garage after the suspension installation...

The Wait Begins

Posted 08-17-2009 at 07:04 PM by 1968Cayman (The 1968 Cayman Project)

I've gotten just about as far as I can without putting the car up on a jig. So I'm waiting for SM Racing to move their shop to their new-n-improved location so that we can get to the suspension installation.

In the meantime, the only recent work I've done in the garage involved putting a utility sink in! I also decided a few weeks ago that the only items that belong in a garage are those that are car-related; my wife was not happy about the decision but was forced into helping the...

What to do, what to do . . .

Posted 06-26-2009 at 06:23 PM by 1968Cayman (The 1968 Cayman Project)

Here are two possibilities for the rear end of this car. One requires a lot of work, the other not so much. As it is, most people like the 'long hood' decklid better. Funny thing- that's the one that would require adding quarter extensions and new tail light buckets.

I happen to like the 993/1968 hybrid look- and NOT just because it would be so much easier to bring to life.

The long hood version is on the left. Just click on it to enlarge to a more viewable size....

Quarters are fit, now the waiting begins . . .

I am completely, utterly astounded when I go into the garage and find a car with doors and quarters. After three years without exterior sheetmetal the recent work is, without doubt, a step forward.

For those people who may be turned off by the use of 993 quarters on a 1968 911, I can only say that I like the flow of the panels more than flares, and it is still possible to use the '68 chrome trim pieces and quarter windows on the new quarters and I'm examining different ways to use...
