The information that follows pertains to reinstalling a Blaupunkt Monterey SQR23 back into a 1984 Porsche 911. Other Porsche models should be similar if not exact and the information could also be helpful when replacing a stock unit.
My car had a Sony CDX-F7705X that the P.O. lost the faceplate to. Love the sound of the flat six and audio components change like fashion so putting the original back in was my chosen direction.
The person who installed the Sony did minimal damage to the original wiring. Because of this minimal molestation along with help from threads from multiple sites, the probable original wiring could be figured out.
Things needed before ripping into the project:
-Multimeter
-9 volt battery
-screwdriver set
-wire cutters and strippers
-crimpers
-harness diagram from existing stereo
-Blaupunkt Monterey SQR23
-2 pin DIN male speaker connectors
-.250 and .110 tab female quick disconnect wire connectors
- wire labels
- shrink tube optional
-etc. depending on your application
Where to get:
Multimeter, 9 volt battery, screwdriver set, wire cutters and strippers, crimpers, etc. - if you need help finding these stop reading this blog.
Harness diagram from existing stereo - Helpful but not needed. Crutchfield is a good source for wiring diagrams.
Blaupunkt Monterey SQR23 - I found a guy selling a 1985 Porsche 944 on Craig's List that was including the original stereo with the car. Talked him into selling me just the stereo. Ebay has them every once in awhile. Sometimes they include Din connectors.
2 pin DIN male speaker connectors. I got mine from UK Ebay. Not much of a selection in the states. Note to people replacing the stock radios. Buy the adapters from Crutchfield and don't cut off the original DIN connectors for the guy that wants to go back to the original setup. It could actually be you at a later date.
.250 and .110 tab Q.D. connectors and shrink tube. Mcmaster-Carr, Radio Shack, etc., etc. Not hard to find.
Wire Labels - Masking tape is good. I used a wire labeling printer in the shop. Overkill but the next person who owns my car will appreciate it when they go to take out the Sony that I reinstall.
Ripping into it:
Remove old deck. The Sony came out easier than I thought it would. No tools needed.
Skip next step if you can't get a wiring harness diagram.
Use harness wiring diagram to label original Porsche wires. Remove negative terminal on car battery. Cut out wiring harness making sure to minimize how much of the original wiring that you cut. I snip right at the crimp marks and only lose the bare wire that were stripped. Make sure you cover any bare wire ends with wire nuts or tape before reconnecting negative battery terminal.
Check your wires for proper labeling.
In my 1984 911:
Brown - Ground
Yellow/Red stripe - 12V Constant
Yellow - 12V Switched
White - Antenna trigger
Brown with red stripe - Speaker + (4 of these)
Brown - Speaker - (4 of these)
There are 3 sets of speaker wires going to the fader in the center console also.
Antenna wire has special connector on it. Not difficult to recognize it.
Use multimeter to check ground, 12v constant, 12v switched, and antenna trigger are labeled properly.
Ground - With the car turned off and the multimeter set on DC voltage. Contact ground wire and - terminal of battery using multimeter. Should see 00.0 volts. I also checked the ground that the previous installer added. It was good. Turn the car on and repeat. Should still be 00.0. Ground is good.
12V constant - With car turned off and the multimeter turned to DC voltage. Contact 12v constant wire and ground wire using multimeter. Should see 12.0V or so. I saw 12.5V.
12V switched - With car turned off and the multimeter turned to DC voltage. Contact 12v switched wire and ground wire using multimeter.
Should see 00.0V. Turn the car on and repeat. Should see 12.0V or so. I saw 13.7V.
Antenna trigger - With car turned off and the multimeter turned to DC voltage. Contact trigger wire and ground wire using multimeter. Should see 00.0V. Turn the car on and repeat. Should still see 00.0V. Connect 12v switched wire to trigger wire. Antenna should rise. Unconnect wires and it should go down. Turn car off. Connect 12v switched to trigger. Nothing should happen. Connect 12v constant to trigger and again nothing should happen.
Speaker wires - Using 9V battery touch + terminal to brown/red wire and - terminal to brown wire of wire pair. Should hear the speaker pop. Do this for the left front, right front, left rear, and right rear speaker pairs. Remove speaker grill when doing this test. If the speaker cone moves out it is hooked up with the correct polarity. If the cone moves in the wires are connected backwards on the speaker.
Disconnect negative battery terminal and crimp quick disconnects on wires. Install shrink tube over connector as well. I install the shrink tube completely over the connector so only the male counterpart has room to slide in. The connections are so close on the back of the Blaupunkt that it wouldn't take much of a conductive particle to short the connectors out.
What wires get what connectors:
Ground - .250 tab female quick disconnect
12V switched - .250 tab female quick disconnect.
Antenna trigger - .110 tab female quick disconnect.
12V constant - .110 tab female quick disconnect.
There is a red jumper cable on the back of the Blaupunkt. Remove this and connect the dash light wire if you want the display to dim with the dashboard instrumentation. Sorry, I left the jumper in place and ignored the dimmer option so I can't identify what dimmer wire you need to tap into. I do know that the dimmer wire needs a .110 tab famale quick disconnect.
Blaupunkt Front View
Blaupunkt Rear View

Back Terminal Connections
Connections:
4 - Ground - Brown
5 - 12V Switched - Yellow
6/7 - Jumped - No Dimmer option.
If dimmer option is desired, connect to .110 tab male on 6. 7 is then not used.
8 - Antenna Trigger - White
9 - 12V Constant - Yellow/Red stripe (Used for memory power)
This should help identify wires for those of you removing stock decks.
Speaker wires:
This is where things can get a little funky depending on what the installer did in your car for the new unit. I can tell you how it should be and how I was able to hook mine up but can't guarantee what was done in your car.
Ignoring fader option:
Install 2 pin DINs to back of Blaupunkt. Round pin is + and flat pin is -.
As deck will sit in dash hook up right front and right rear to right 2 pin DIN connector. Positive to positive and negative to negative.
Do the same for the left speakers on the left 2 pin DIN connector. Slide deck into dash and enjoy.
Hooking up the fader option:
There should be a harness with 3 sets of speakers wires going to the fader in the center console. In my car the installer just cut back the 3wire pairs in my harness.
Fader wiring diagram:
Fader Wiring Diagram.pdf
Install 2 pin DIN connectors in back of deck.
Right + connects to Right Fader
Right - connects to both Right Rear - and Right Front -
Left + connects to Left Fader
Left - connects to Left Rear - and Left Front -
Check continuity in dash and at fader control for all the speaker + wires. Label these wires and connect to appropriate + wires for each speaker in the dash. Slide deck into dash and enjoy.
