BMW 318i engine squeal
1995 318i engine noise, loud squeal after the engine warms up.
Yesterday I replaced the water pump, belts, and tension pulley. Started the engine and after it warmed up the noise is back. I then ran the engine without the AC belt, still squealed. Took the tension off the belt for the alternator, power steering, started the engine and it still squealed. I believe I eliminated all accessories, the noise seems to be in the inside of the engine, it does seem to go away a bit when the engine is revved up. Would this be the bearings in side of the engine? Under the valve cover or main bearings on the crank shaft? Would a low or no oil pressure cause it from lack of lubrication? Engine has 220k miles on it. Am I looking at a whole engine replacement? Advice on engine replacement? I did change out the automatic transmission at 198K by myself, not sure if I want to take on an engine replacement. Transmission was a big task. Can you pull engine and transmission out together? Thanks, Paul |

Could be a tensioner in the serpentine belt going south.
You do know you are posting this in the Porsche 911 section, right....

Put a Porsche engine in it.
Or a small block chevy..... On my 2002 I always pull the engine/gearbox together.

It's a descendent of the 2 liter 2002 and 1981 and later 1.8 liter 320i CIS motors. Great simple and easy to work on motors too. |
