Gas smell

Hey guys! I own a 2002 BMW 325ci (late E46). When I start my car to warm it up because I live in Wisconsin, I notice a very strong gas smell. It goes away after driving on the highway or when I have my air recirculation on. This morning I got in it and drove it maybe 5-7 miles, when I got home smoke started pouring out of the hood. Popped the hood and most of it looked like it was coming from under the top piece of "fancy" plastic cover. Any thoughts to help me? Also I'm not losing any performance or fuel efficiency.

Hello and welcome to the forum! Can you be a bit more specific about the "under the top piece of "fancy" plastic cover". Also, have you pulled any error codes? Is your CEL on? Does your exhaust have smoke coming out of it? If so, white or blue?

The more details, the better.
