Question about key
I have traded in a 2000 323ci with only one key, and I am looking for another key on ebay. I am wondering whether both of the shape and the code should match my current key? Or only the code should match? Since I have found that many keys have the same code: FCC ID: LX8 FZV DOC/MDC:267K1268.

Like a traditional key, it needs to be cut to match the doors and ignition. The ones you see on Ebay are used keys that can never work to actually start the car unless you change the doors and ignition to match. Those keys are only good as remote controls for the door and nothing more.
The only solution is a new key at the dealer. Typically aroun $100 - $150. rjp |
But actually, I could find the keys of the same cut as my current key on ebay. Could they start my car?

Make sure the key looks exactly like your other one. The later key has the colored roundel in the middle, wheras the earlier one is all black rubber. One has a replaceable battery, the other one doesnt. |
There is no way the key will work with the EWS. that chip is programmed from the factory. you have to order the key from a dealership. you could open the doors and the glovebox, but not start the car. the precedure for coding that you are mentioning is to set the remote to unlock the doors. not program the chip in the key.
