four, but only the two located before the catalytic converter must be replaced when they go bad. They affect fuel/air mixture. The two after the converter don't feedback into engine function so you could let them go.

Each sensor costs about $110 at a parts store, takes 30 min or less to install and is a pretty easy DIY. Go to the dealer and they will charge about $250 per sensor for parts and labor.

Is there a DIY that you know of? Or at least photos of where they are located?

There is one here at Pelican for the E36. It would be very similar on your car and is about like changing spark plugs. The hard part is getting a wrench on the sensor and then snaking the wire up to the connector which is on top of the engine on the E36 (at least on mine). We had to cut the handle short on a a 22mm crescent wrench.
