1999 323i cylinder head repair

Wayne,
I just completed a cylinder head gasket replacement on my 1999 BMW
323i. It went fairly well considering I didn't have the specialty tools
or the previous experience. I had the head rebuilt by a local shop and
it appears they did a pretty good job. The vehicle had ran hot until it
died and the head shop said it was warped by about 3 thousandths. It
took me a couple off times to time the cams correctly as I didn't realize
in which location the sprockets had to be in when attaching the vanos
unit. Success. the vehicle runs and has what would appear to be correct
power and acceleration. However and here comes my question, at idle it
is making a noise at the intake adjuster unit, part# 11611440049. The
unit functions correctly, opens and closes but at idle it sounds as if it
is closed and is trying to suck air but not maintaining a sufficient
seal, much like it would sound if you tried to cover the end of a vacuum
hose and the air was still able to slip past. I wonder if you would have
any suggestions or recommend anything to check out. Upon acceleration the
noise vanishes and as I have stated the vehicle has sufficient power and
acceleration. I wonder if it is possible that I may not have the cams
timed correctly or if it is some other problem and I just am not sure
where i should be looking. Please understand that I am just your average
backyard mechanic and just couldn't afford the $7500 the import repair
shop said it would cost to replace the engine. I learned quite a lot by
taking on and completing this project, believe me when I say there were
days I wasn't sure if I would be able to complete. I do know that I
still have to replace the oil, coolant temp sensor in the block as the
heat gauge is stuck open at hot. I know the engine is not hot as the
radiator movement shows an active water pump and I have a new thermostat
and housing. Any assistance you might be able to provide would be
greatly appreciated.
