Removing tint from rear window?

Just looked at a nice clean white 2001 325 sedan with a stick shift on a used car lot in Sacramento.

Other than a bent lower control rod on the rear, and lots of curb rash on the wheels, it appears to be in pretty decent shape.

PROBLEM - It has tint on the rear side windows and on the rear window. The side windows are pretty clear, but the rear window is a mess. If you look in the rearview mirror, you can barely tell what kind of car is behind you - in the daytime..

My search of the forum turns up two approaches for removing the tint film from the rear window without destroying the rear window heater traces - undiluted ammonia, and a steamer.

My wife has a steamer that she uses to iron shirts, is that big enough to do this job?

Any opinions on the best way to do this?

What is the likelihood that I can do it without damaging the traces?.

Thanks.

Did you alread buy the car?...........get price of NEW back glass and negociate a reduce price and then just replace the whole thing.

Decided against the car. It is cute, but I want a wagon. If I don't find the stick shift wagon I want, and I have to settle for a sedan, I will go for a 330 or a 530. I like the wife's 330.

Gas mileage on a 3 liter is identical but it has significantly more punch.
