engine not starting/temp shows hot

My 2003 325i was running fine, until I turned it off a few weeks ago. Tried to start, and engine turns over fine, but temp gauge shows hot, when it's cold. Replaced sensor lower hose, but still won't start, and gauge still shows hot, after red indicator goes out. Could it be the engine temp sensor, and if so, can I get to it without removing intake manifold. Any pics available?

thanks for any help.
