2002 325i alternator replacement
I currently own a 2002 325i sedan. The wife came home last night and the car was whistling. I drove it to work last night and it continued to whistle. on the way home this morning, the whistle stopped and the battery light came on. I checked the charging system. and there seems to be no output from the alternator (the volts stayed with the car off and running.) I`m assuming that it`s the alternator. How hard is it to replace the alternator? I just bought the car and I really don`t have $$ for the 85.00 service manual on amazon.com. Any help would be much appreciated....Thanks....Tom

Could also be the voltage regulator which I believe is mounted inside the alternator. I would take the alternator off and take it to an auto parts store that can test it.
You can buy Wayne's 101 Projects book for $22. It covers E30 and E36 but many projects are exactly the same for E46's too. Here is the book: http://www.101projects.com/ Here is the article on alternators from the book: http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/techarticles/101-Projects-89-Alternator/101-Projects-89-Alternator.htm
