New Exhaust worth it?

Hi,

I have a 2000 323i Wagon. I'd like to get a little better gas mileage and maybe feel a little more power in the process. I'm considering a new cat-back exhaust system, but 1.) I don't want the car to sound obnoxious and 2.) Don't want to shell out close to $1000 if that money could be spent more wisely.

I'm wondering if I'd be better off starting with new engine management software or approaching this differently. Has anyone here used something like the Borla cat-back system and what were the results?

Thanks!

I don't have hard data to back it up, but I am quite confident that replacing the exhaust will give you negligible mileage and power improvement, and you will certainly never recover your investment in fuel savings, vendor claims notwithstanding.

You did not mention "cold air intakes". that is fine because they are not worth mentioning. They sound cool, but that is about all they do.

On that car, after you eliminate any unnecessary weight that you might carry around (e.g. carrying tire chains year-round, 40 lbs of tools, etc), the next thing would be selecting tires for low rolling resistance and low wind resistance. Be advised, though, that high efficiency tires tend to be low comfort and low road grip tires.

You might get a noticeable boost in power with a different chip, but you may not pass emissions inspection.

Thanks Man,

I think the car was engineered pretty much right-on from the beginning. I had a '97 318i before this 323i and I left it bone-stock too. I'll have to find other things to ticker with on the wagon. Maybe better speakers...
