Question 325 induction raises a question

I own a 325 compact sport fitted with a K&N induction kit. But I have a question related to a component that is no longer attached to the airflow arrangement.

There are two pictures included with this post in the hope that somebody can both identify the component, and also advise if its removal from the food chain is likely to have any detrimental effects.

The picture of the notepad shows the original air feed minus mas (fitted to K&N kit nearest to filter), but shows where the vertical pipe from the lower component in the second picture once went.

The Component that is concerning me is marked with an X in the second picture.

Said component has an opening in the rear that opens into the empty area behind the suspension strut and the bulkhead. I have no idea what it is, nor what its removal from the airflow chain (due to the K&N having no provision for it) may have.

Does anyone have any ideas that will put my mind at rest (or not at rest as the case may be)?

Are you sure that box is open?

If so it is allowing unfiltered are into your engine.

no idea if it is fully open and unfiltered in any way, but there is a definite opening into the area mentioned. Short of sticking something through to check (not something I want to do bearing in mind I have no idea what it is) then I am still in the dark.

It must do something, or why put it there. As you say, it is beyond the air filter when in normal airbox layout, but I honestly have no idea. It is starting to look like I need to go to BM and ask them WTF it does.

would love it if we could work it out here though.
