heater misbehaving

I have a 2000 540i Sport Package (4.4V8 with six speed and M badging). I am the only owner, having taken delivery of it in November of 1999. I gave it to my daughter for a few years while she was in college and it fell into a bit of "disrepair". Some dents and dings that I can deal with, but a few other things causing me grief.

In the polar vortex we are experiencing now, the only time the heater will throw heat is when I put the windshield defrost on. Other than that its blowing -10 air at me. The AC is obviously off, and its a brand new thermostat, having been replaced earlier this winter. The engine coolant was flushed and replaced with the thermostat, and it runs fine. Driving the car is (as always) a joy, and there doesn't appear to be any engine cooling issues.

Any damper or common heater issues I can look into?

It could be the Final Stage Resistor. Check also your battery's voltage.
