Rear Diff - Noise/Rebuild for 528e

Hi all,

I have just purchased a 1984 528e and the rear diff is making a bit of gear noise (a slight whine). I don't know what the car sounded like before as I bought it with a blown 4HP22 (that I just recently rebuilt).

I would like to tear the rear differential down and rebuild. My Bently manual has very little info on the rear differential. Who would have a manual with more detail? (set-up specs, shimming, etc)

And where should I go for parts for the rear diff - Pelican?

I am a new BMW owner...its my first BMW and I love it.

TIA
Bill

In my opinion, you may just want to replace the diff as a complete unit. You can pick these up in relatively good shape on ebay for around $250-300. I believe the rear end was the same on all 5 and 3 series throughout the 80's so you may be able to add a LSD rear end while you are at it.
