2003 540I charging problems
Hi Guys,
I'm in need of some help. I have a 2003 540IA Msport. Im having a problem tracing down what is going on with my charging system. Im getting voltage at the battery and positive lug on alt. of 13.9-14.7volts. The other wires in the plug connector to alt. doesn't show 12 volts. Charging light is on all the time. Abs, DSP and brake lights come on and go off. This all started from a battery change. When hooked to scan tool it shows voltage of 12.5v. What is going on here? Any ideas?? Wiring schematics in the Bentley Manual doesn't show any test information. |

The car should have a fairly standard charging system compared to the newer models which need the battery programed. Unless you have some other sort of gremlins hiding the battery light staying on should indicate an issue with either the alternator or the battery. both can be tested.
It's also good to double check that the battery cables are tight and free of corrosion. Feel free to check through this DIY article on 540i battery replacement to make sure you completed all the steps. https://www.pelicanparts.com/BMW/techarticles/BMW-5-Series-E39/09-BASICS-Battery_Replacement/09-BASICS-Battery_Replacement.htm Hope this helps! -Matt |
