considering buying a 525iT & fan switch

Greetings,
I am considering becoming a BMW owner and am looking at two 525iT wagons for sale. On a '92 model, I can hear a noise like a rattle or something vibrating in the area behind the fan switch and climate control area of the dash. Does anyone know if there might be something expensive in this location causing the noise and it is not just a rattle? From the nature of the noise, I believe it may be a component malfunctioning, but the climate contol system seems to work fine. On a '94 model I have seen, neither the heat or A/C works - the fan will not come on. I would hope it may be something simple, like a fuse or fan switch contact. Could there be something more expensive, such as a $800 computer module involved?

Does any one have any advise for or against purchasing a 525iT wagon?
