different engine???

Hi,
How do I tell if my engine has been changed?....it is supposed to be a 94 530i....the oil filter for this model would not fit...however, the filter from a 540i fits....so is my engine a 530 0r 540...?

Um. How fast is your car? ;) Seriously, the M60B30 and M60B40 motors are externally nearly identical and use many of the same parts (like oil filters, iirc). I suspect the first filter you tried was an error.

Paul,

Thanks for responding.....I ordered the oil filter from **********.com...i guess its possible that they could have given me the wrong one... when the guy at the shop brought the 2nd filter, 2 days later, he said if it fits that would be weird because this one was from a 540...... so, is there some other way to tell and be sure?........

You could check and see if the VIN numbers match on the engine and the vehicle. The easiest place on the car would either be on the dash or the driver's side door. I'm scrutinizing a picture of my engine compartment right now, and I can't see a number plate in easy view, but I'm sure it's there.
