540i 6 - Trans Problem

Just developed a lot of slop shifting from 2nd to 3rd. Trans wants to go to 5th. Rebuilt all shifter parts <2000 miles ago, and all was great! No visible damage, etc. under car; Any clues? I understand there are "detent balls" that can wear out, but those symptoms are supposed to be a difficulty in getting out of 3rd. Not my case. no other shift/run/performance problems that indicat a trans problem; sure seems like the shifter, but all appears OK. Anyone know about those "detent balls"?

This is not exactly an answer to your question. But I happened to talk to a Dealer Mechanic recently who mentioned that a disporportionate amount of 540 manuals had some tranny and clutch problems that are similar to what you are talking about. He did say that there was something that wears out too frequently. Detent balls maybe?? I cant remember what he said. I need to give him a call and Ill ask him next time I see him. Hope you find out about that.

Thanks for the reply. I'd like to know what you find out. Alldata indicates that failure of these items causes difficulty in disengaging 3rd gear, but an Audi buddy tells me he's seen total trans failures due to these balls wearing to the point that they actually fall into the trans. I'm going to replace them, and will post the results. Meanwhile, if anyone has any facts about this, let me know!
