Oil Line Replacement
Hello All,
I have been ssearching for a fix to my oil leak for many months to no avial. I was hoping that it was something easy enough and have had the intake off several times trying to search for it. I think it is down to replacing the oil lines that come from the filter housing. I know one of them goes from the filter housing to the driver side portion of the block just above the oil pan. But, I don't know if the other one is accessable. I have many of the parts in search of a problem I have had with early morning starts and I think it is related to air in the oil line due to the bad oil leak. THe lower hose attaches via a banjo type bolt that is barely accessable with a crows foot wrench with a swivel. The other one I am not sure about. The filter will not come off or is almost impossible to remove without removing the alternator which is a major pain because you have to just about remove the power steering pump. Long story short. I see clear clean oil just on the underside of the driver side head parallel with the oil line. I think the oil line has a swaged fitting and it is failing. The power steering line failed the same way. Does anyone know if the top oil hose is replaceable with the motor in and what has to be removed to replace them? I know I can do the lower one but they both have to come out to remove the oil filter housing. This does not look like a fun job. Does anyone have a picture or diagram of the area under the head where this how is attached. Do I have to pull the motor to replace it? Please Help. Rich |

hmmmmm....I have an identical vehicle with an identical leak...imagine that. If it's the oil line, have you finally replaced it? I have a great hose manufacturer locally that can usually build any hose to order (if you take them the old one)......inquiring minds want to know if you cured the problem...I love my 530, but it leaks oil like an MG.....

I have not fixed it yet. It leaks like a bit#$. I do see that the oil is . coming down the front of head. I think one of the hoses is so close to the head that it has failed due to the heat generated from the head. I replaced the power steering hose that was next to the head when I saw this one leaking. I am not sure how tough it is going to be to replace both of the hoses from the oil filter. The lower one doesn't appear to be to bad. But, you have to get to them both and remove the filter to replace them. The nut that attaches the hoses to the filter housing is impossible to get off without a major amount of work. It looks like the power steering pump has to come off along with the alternator in order to get at it. It appears to be easier to get at the hose connections. I am not sure if I can get to the hose on the top. If anyone can help with a diagram and instructions please let me know!
Thanks

Those hoses ARE hard to replace.....If you get a long extension & a swivel socket you can get the nut off by coming from the right side aft-->come right under the head area->by the removed power steering res.

The hose connections are the issue. I need to locate the one that goes to the top. I know I can loosen the banjo fitting on the lower hose at the crank case, it is the other one I have trouble locating. I'll have to take a look at the bolt from the bottom with a swivel but I am not sure if this is possible. I tried a number of things and the space was very limiting. Maybe I can get to it with a 1/4 " drive socket but if I get the two hoses disconnected from their respective block location and obviously undo the fastening nut on the the oil filter housing I think I can weave the hoses and filter assembly out as a full assembly. I know this was a mouthfull and is not easy but I think it is possible. I am at wits end. Do you know where the top hose attaches to the block? Do you have a diagram? do I have to take the engine out to replace them?
Thanks

Hey Cowboy,
Are you saying that the top oil hose connection is underneath the power steering res and this is all I have to do to disconnect the top hose? Is the hose connected to the head or the block. It sounds like it is a complete no see um. Meaning you have to take it off blindlly. Or, were you suggesting how I take the hoses off of the filter assembly. I don't think there is anyway to re-install the hoses on the filter assembly without having it assembled on the way in. There is little to no play on the filter to hose length as it attaches to the block. Have you replaced these before? Thanks again 94 530i |

I wz ta|kn about the ones from the oil housing->U dont have to remove the housing.....I have done a few of them & just remember them being a pain.....havnt done any lately so dont remember exactley-->but thats the hard part is getting the upper nut off-->one runs into the motor mount bracket.

I went to the stealer today and tried to get some information from them about the block termination location of the two hoses. THey were not a lot of help. But, I did see that there is a bracket that "both" hoses attach to as they enter the block. I did not know they are basically parallel hoses from what I see. They come out of the filter housing as a pair and must terminate in the block as a pair. I have to get underneath the beast Friday to see exactly where they terminate on the block. Does anyone know if the location can be gotten to? If I can get these off I think I can get the filter housing side off. Does anyone know if the pair of hoses require any special tooling? does anyone have a picture of the area? THey stealer couldn't help.
Thanks
