Good Afternooon All,
I have always run 5W-40 Castrol Syntec in my 2000 540i, but because of trading my daily driver, I have several gallons of Mobil-1 5W-30 that I no longer have a specific need for. My question, is this oil acceptable for use in my 540i? It is not used at the track, rather it only sees duty in the summer months when the snow has left Wisconsin. Your advice and feedback is appreciated! Steve |

When I asked this question of BMWNA I was told that Mobil1 is one of the synthetic oils approved by BMW. (Castrol synthetic is another, BTW)
My 99 528i calls for 5W-30, and unless you have an M5 made before 3/2000, the V8 is the same. Your owners manual should also specify the correct viscosity. BTW I will be switching from the BMW synthetic (made by Castrol) to Mobil1 at my next change. Mostly because I don't like the amount of brown waxy stuff building up inside the engine. Which I DON'T get on my three other "toys"! All which run Mobil1.

The 5W30 Mobil one will be fine for your 540i.
