3hp-22 Atf

I have a 1983 528e automatic, I put a m20 out of a early 87 325 into. After running it about 5 hours in neutral and about 15 miles on the road it started smoking. I thought I had blown the rear main seal, but after draining the Trans in preparation of pulling it, I thumbed through my Bentley and noticed that when doing a drain and refill, it only takes about 3 quarts of ATF,(unless converter is drained also). Now it looks as though I may have around 5 quarts in my drain pan. I also noticed that there are 2 different dip sticks for checking the fluid level and that may be why I have more ATF in there than I was suppose to. I guess my question is, "is there suppose to be more than 3 quarts of AFT when draining a 3HP-22?

I emptied the drained ATF into a 1 gallon milk jug and did in fact come up with 3 quarts of fluid! Yet when I checked my oil level, it seems to be right where it is suppose to. So now I'm thinking maybe it is the converter seal? Anyone have this problem before? Any help would be great!
