Suspension Upgrade 99 540ia
My car has about 80K mls ( fairly gentle driving fromprevious lady owner) and lost the edge in terms of handling.
I am planning to do the usual stuff and gradually replace worn bushes etc. Any advice on good articles would be appreciated. Re dampers: I suppose it's Koni Vs Bilstein? Which is best and why? Is it necessary to replace springs? One further question: Is the recirculating ball steering responsible for a slightly vague road feel - or is it likely to be a combination of various worn steering components? I never did quite understand why the 530 got rack and pinion steering and the "flagship" 540 the lesser "recirculating ball" ?? Maybe it's the weight of the engine? |

V8 Was Too Big
I had the same question as to why the 540 didnt get the rack & pinion. It turns out there is not enough room to go staight across with the rack as they packed the eight in there tight. It sits fairly low also requiring the 'offset' of the center link.
For a steering box set up, its hardly sloppy as some of my first 1970's cars .....Duster, LeSabre. Ooofa.

My suspension setup goes something like this:
Bilstein Sports Eibach Progressives Racing Dynamics sways (front and rear) With this setup, I have out-handled a Dinan E36 S3 M3. It is a stiff ride, but I find it comfortable.
