E34 Power Steering Leak
So can you use those Lucas Stop Leak oils in the CHF fluid? I'm thinking to get the hyrdaulic stop leak rather than the standard power steering one since we have the special fluid.
Anyone else try this? Can't tell where the leak is coming from at this point, but I'm looking. However, I'm on my 2nd quart ... and anyone who has had to deal with this can tell you that's not cheap!

eric, man, don't you have an 850?
I have a '94 530I (E34). it leaks from the power steering gear as well; actually the resivor has a hairline crack and I've epoxied it several times. And what's this about 'special' PS fluid? I've been using joe-average stuff since I bought this teutonic money-vacum 5 years ago...good thing I love the way it goes and stops. In the process of doing the suspension; bilsteins, eibach springs, control and thrust arms.... I have this hotrod fantasy of stuffing a 5L V12 in this thing...what a sleeper that would be

I have a '94 530i and an iT.
Both have ASC. The sedan has ASC+T. They both have the large reservoir without the dipstick. BOTH require CHF 11s power steering fluid. E34's equipped with self leveling suspension (LAD) also require CHF. Earlier E34's with these systems and /or self leveling suspension required CHF 7.1. You can tell which to use, 11s or 7.1, by what is stamped on the cap of the reservoir. The CHF is mineral based and not compatible with regular P/S fluid. I have read of seal failures because the wrong fluid was used. If your car has the smaller reservoir with the dipstick then ATF is what to use as per called out in the Bentley Manual. When you are talking about a leak from the P/S box are you talking about the top of the box or where the pitman shaft comes out the bottom? Last edited by Spasso; 05-31-2006 at 09:24 PM.. |
