Stereo wiring shorting on 530i Touring

I've got a 1994 530i Touring that is just a joy to drive, BUT.....

Recently the left front speakers started scratching and such when a connection goes back. I haven't heard that noise in a car since 1980 thankfully (a 1973 Fiat Sport Coupe - An emergency trainer if there ever was one).

Do any of you know if there is a connection between the HiFi amp and the speakers that would cause such a problem? A seperate ground for each side of the car in front? The Bentley manual doesn't show any such thing, but one never knows. I think that the back left speaker is OK, but I do need to recheck that.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Fin

I have the exact same problem in the exact same car, only it's the left rear speaker that comes and goes.
I had to feed a new key-switched-hot wire to the back of the stereo a bit ago when the whole stereo just quit making noise one day.
you're right, the bently manual doesn't show $hit for this, and I don't know where the power amp is.
I did have most of the dash apart to wire in my valentine1 and fix the stereo.
Where IS that f**king power amp, anyway?

I've seen this problem often and it's almost always the head unit. Pull off the volume control knob and spray a little electrical contact cleaner in there. It'll usually clear it up for a while. I put a factory 99 M3 unit in my 92 Touring and it's a straight swap. Nice to have the additional features of RDS and PTY too.
