Hello!!!
I have a '92 525i (M50) that has an oil leak from the plugs on the back of the filter housing. These plugs seal two machining access holes in the filter housing and they are sealed with O rings and the plugs are restrained with spring clips. The O rings have degraded - one has broken and both are hard as iron with virtually no elasticity to effect a seal. The problem is that BMW do not consider these a wear item and the dealer recomends I replace the housing for ~$400. Obviously I'm not planning on doing that for the sake of a .20 O ring.... My question is this - what size O ring should I use to replace the perished items? I've got a 22mm ID x 2.38mm thick O ring and it looks/feels to be too thin. Can anybody recommend the correct size? Thanx in advance, Doug |

From your post I'm assuming that you have the old o-rings in your grimy little paws. Take them and head down to your local auto parts store. (Autozone, Checker, Kragen, Napa, Pepboys, whatever.) A lot of them have general purpose o-ring kits that contain a multitude of sizes. Find one that is the close to same as the originals. Maybe just a fuzz bigger. Doing this I've even managed to find suitable ones for my +20 year old Kawasaki. Ones that the dealer wanted to charge me BIG bucks for! Failing there, try searching the online catalog of McMaster-Carr ( www.mcmaster.com ). When it comes to hardware stuff, they have it.
And finally, if you aren't familiar with www.realoem.com, take a look here: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=HD63&mospid=47404&btnr=11_0526&hg=11&fg=30
