1998 528 won't stay running

1998 528i automatic

was running errands, all was fine, went home. 10 min later I went to start the car, it cranked, started, ran at idle, pressing the gas pedal had very little affect on engine speed. could not go past 1,800 rpm. went to bed.
next day, engine at ambient temp, 75 degrees, attempt to start car, it cranks fine, catches, I let go of the key, and within a second it stops running, throttle has almost no effect on speed of engine.

any ideas?

John

No run situation

Are you sure the key cylinder to start the car is functioning correctly? I'd start there
