Intermittent AC - 1997 528i

I have a 1997 528i. Recently, the AC seems to blow cold air when I am driving at speed but will blow lukewarm air (at best) when I am sitting in traffic or idling? Any thoughts on what could be the trouble?

The aux fan may be out (could be a blown fuse) which would cause the AC efficiency to drop with no air moving over the condensor unit. Have you checked you engine temps when in traffic? They should also go up when sitting in traffic and drop to normal at speed.
