94 530I;seems to be fduel starvation.advice

hi-mileage '94 530I...wifey's ride.
it lost power a week back..would idle but seemed to fuel-starve under load.
I changed the plugs..they needed it. cleaned the K&N filter, it neeeded it.
changed the fuel filters..looked at the gas that came out of them...trash.
still does the same thing
I checked for fault codes. nothing.
I want to pull the fuel line up by the rails to see what comes out...thoughts? advice?
where's the fuel pump on this..I guess I need to look again.
thanks...

I'm not really up on these E34 Bimmers, but the fuel pump should be in the tank like it is on the E39 models. Fuel pressure should be ~50+PSI. The fuel pick up in the tank should have a sock on it to keep the big crap from getting in the pump, however if you say the fuel coming out of the filters looked pretty bad, then there is a good chance the filter sock on the pump is clogged somewhat.
On the E39 (1996-2003) if you pull up the bottom of the rear seat you will find the access to get at the fuel pumps and sender gauge.

Fuel pump access plate on the e34 is in the trunk right hand side. Pull up the pad and remove the cover to access the fuel pump. I would check the neoprene fuel lines to make sure they have not kinked or closed off on the inside from age. The m50 6 cylinders are not a lot of trouble if maintained properly.

pulled the pump, clogged sock, replaced the sock with a fine-micron SS filter media
blew out all the lines, disassembled and cleaned the regulator, pulled and cleaned the injectors

result?

runs like new.

at 195K, it drives far better than my wife's new saturn POS

Ah, a cheap easy fix, cool.
If it happens again in a relative short period of time the tank may have a lot of crap in it. Might need to be flushed out. Is the E34 tank made out of plastic like the tanks in our E39's? If so there shouldn't be any rust buildup in them.
